This series comprises records pertaining to international students studying in the United States through scholarships provided by the Lutheran Church in America's (LCA) Division for World Mission and Ecumenism (DWME). The records are from 1955-1987 with the bulk dating from 1972-1985. Several persons working within the DWME retained or generated these records, including the office of the Executive Director as well as the different area secretaries. Record types in the series include handwritten and typewritten correspondence, scholarship applications, grade transcripts, and some financial records pertaining to student expenses. The majority of records is correspondence with subject matter including initial interest in scholarship opportunities; notification from colleges and universities pertaining to acceptance into degree programs; questions regarding housing, meal allowance, incidental expenses, and traveling and shipping expenses; updates provided to DWME regarding progress made during schooling; and discussions regarding future plans after completion of schooling. Other records include copies of grade reports issued by the college or university, copies of academic transcripts, medical questionnaires, and scholarship applications and their accompanying materials. Because of the sensitive nature of some of the records, access to this collection is restricted and at the discretion of the archivist. These records were included in one accession, of which the provenance is unknown before the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America's Division for Global Mission transferred the records to the archives. This accession does not represent the entirety of the students provided educational funding by the DWME. There are also additional scholarship student files in other series within this record group, including but not limited to LCA 28/3/8 Malaysia and Singapore Scholarship Files, 1967-1986. Records are arranged alphabetically by country and student's last name.
